NOISE EMISSION FROM PRIVATE CARS IN URBAN TRAFFIC

GELUIDSEMISSIE VAN PERSONENAUTO'S IN STEDELIJK VERKEER

The noise emissions of thirteen private cars of very different types were measured. The power output of the cars was between 34 kw/tonne and 126 kw/tonne; the sample included cars with manual gearboxes (both 4 and 5 speeds) and with automatic transmission. Noise emissions in urban traffic were measured and the engine speed and throttle setting registered. The measurements were carried out in such a way as to establish the influence of the driver (all the vehicles were driven both by the owner and by the same test driver) and of the route (suburban/central). The figures obtained by this method were compared with te results of test using four type approval measuring methods, including the method prescribed by the Netherlands traffic rules and regulations, and it was found that on average the results obtained using ISO/DIS 7188 were closest to those obtained in urban traffic by means of the method described.
