REMOTE INVESTIGATIONS IN GEOLOGICAL ENGINEERING

DALJINSKA ISTRAZIVANJA U INZENJERSKOJ GEOLOGIJI

The paper presents three methods for the remote investigation of the earth's surface, which permit a rough determination of the physical and mechanical properties of rocks, rock disorders and damages caused by tectonic movements, and the study of physical and geological processes in basic rocks. The use of cameras, multispectral scanner and radar, analysis of photographs and their use in engineering practice are described. The investigation of possible construction sites (tectonic disorders, seismic activity, study of physical and geological processes - forecasts of settlement, erosion and sedimentation) and physical and geological processes conditioned by the force of gravity (landslides, rockslides) are illustrated, and an example of a location survey is given. It is concluded that the combination of remote sensing methods and appropriate site investigation techniques is needed in large projects in order to evaluate the quality and suitability of a construction site.
