AIRFIELD AND AIRSPACE CAPACITY AND DELAY: PROBLEMS AND ACTION AREAS. INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY

The Transportation Research Board Committee on Airfield and Airspace Capacity and Delay, A3A14, addressed the problems and the actions that might be taken to improve capacity and decrease delay. Ten categories of problems/actions were defined and ranked. The results of the Committee's ratings are illustrated in a bar graph, and a commentary is provided. The 10 categories are as follows: improper match of demand to system capacity; inadequate number and operational use of runways; funding, planning and institutional problems; inefficient flow control, spacing and management; noise and its effects/consequences; inadequate computer/communications technology usage; wake vortex and its effects/consequences; insufficient analysis/evaluation/information; inadequate overall airport/terminal configurations and facilities; and inefficient airport access/egress/processing. Each of these categories are covered in presentations in this Circular.
