METALS BRING NEW PROPERTIES TO MATERIALS COMPETITION

With downsizing more or less completed, the US auto industry must take an even harder look at materials substitutions. Designers are searching for materials that possess such properties as corrosion resistance, good strength-to-weight ratios and fracture toughness. The article looks at the growing list of competitive materials including high strength low alloy steels, aluminum, magnesium and powder metals. A variety of new casting techniques is also considered.
