THE GENEVA LOW FLOOR TRAM

Geneva, Switzerland, replaced all its streetcar routes with buses except for the 8.5-km Route 12 which carries 20 million riders annually. To increase the speed and regularity of service, self-service fare collection, segregated right-of-way and centralized traffic control have been introduced. Now attention has turned to replacement of 35-year-old rolling stock. A single-ended, 2-unit articulated, low-floor design with capacity for 340 passengers was chosen. The specification calls for a 2-level floor, resilient wheels and chopper controls. Other details are given for the car. A prototype, delivered in 1984, was extensively tested and found satisfactory. The 46 production cars are now expected to enter service in 1987. Geneva is also studying restoration of streetcar service on two bus routes where traffic has been growing.
