TRAM PRIORITY IN A CO-ORDINATED TRAFFIC SIGNAL SYSTEM

This paper outlines techniques developed by the road traffic authority traffic signals group, in consultation with other relevant parties, to provide tram priority in co-ordinated traffic signal systems in Melbourne. SCATS (Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System) is the traffic signal system being implemented in Melbourne under the code name of SCRAM (Signal Coordination of Regional Areas in Melbourne). Some of the measures used along the North Balwyn tram route are discussed in detail to illustrate the techniques developed. It is tentatively concluded that these techniques will allow public transport priority to operate within co-ordinated traffic signal systems, while still providing overall benefits to motor vehicles through traffic signal coordination.
