The design for the new bridge to carry the southbound carriageway of the Princes Highway over the Georges River at Tom Ugly's point, 20 km South of Sydney, comprises nine spans of three identical steel box girders, composite with a cast-in-place reinforced concrete deck. The major spans are 70 m in length with end spans of 50 m. This paper briefly outlines the reasons for selection of construction materials and the configuration of the bridge. Two particular aspects of the design are discussed in detail, viz, ship impact and web design. In the case of ship impact on bridge piers, few guidelines are available for impacts involving small and intermediate size vessels (up to a thousand tonnes). An approach is described which can be used to assess the adequacy of bridge piers. The design of webs for steel box girder bridges is not appropriately covered by the NAASRA bridge design specification (1976). The approach used in the design of webs for this bridge is outlined.
