NZS 3104:1983: specification for concrete production--high grade and special grade and NZS 3108:1983: concrete production--ordinary grade were published in late 1983. NZS 3104 now supersedes NZS 2086: ready mixed concrete production and at the same time embraces site mixing requirements for the designated grades high and special. NZS 3108 is a new, much shorter standard covering concrete primarily mixed on site in situations designated as ordinary grade some of which were previously described in NZS 3109 concrete construction and NZS 1900 chapter 9. 3a:1970. This 2-part article is intended to promote discussions on the standards as well as to provide information about several of their more important sections and requirements. This part covers aspects of high and special grades of concrete production for ready mixed and site mixed plants to NZS 3104. It gives details of the requirements to be met in order to produce concrete described in the standard and of forward control checks: supervision of concrete production, aggregates, batching equipment, mix design, testing for immediate and retrospective control, handling ready mixed concrete on site. For part 2 of the article see TRIS 393317. (TRRL)
