A review of the UK Department of Transport's policies for the provision of cycle facilities in urban areas. These include undertaking research, providing technical advice to local highway authorities and the introduction of legislation viz the Cycle Tracks Act and Regulations 1984. Mention is made of safety campaigns run and of a national proficiency scheme for children. The Department is supporting a 5 year research programme involving five large-scale innovatory cycle schemes. Brief details of two of the schemes are given. Implementation of four schemes is expected by 1985 with the remaining scheme starting the year after. Shared use of existing pedestrian facilities by cyclists is also considered. (TRRL)
