GENERALIZED MODEL FOR VEHICLE PERFORMANCE AND FUEL CONSUMPTION EVALUATION

A functional representation of the dynamic behavior of a motor vehicle is given. A complete analysis of the various parameters affecting performance and fuel consumption is carried out in order to investigate their influence. Functional relationships are developed to obtain an adequate model for performance and fuel consumption evaluation of an automotive vehicle alone or with one or more trailers. Various types of clutches (torque converters) and transmissions are taken into consideration. General equations for predicting performance of a 2, 4 or more wheel drive vehicle are presented for the cases of normal ride and axle skidding. A procedure for evaluating fuel consumption when vehicle speed versus time and road gradient and banking angles are known, is given. Other possible applications and improvements of the proposed calculation model are discussed.
