TOWARDS AN INTEGRATED TRANSPORT SYSTEM

The growth of the demand for urban mobility is to be placed in reference to various factors and, in particular, to the urbanization processes, influenced by the great development of private motoring. The latter, able to serve the peripheric areas efficiently, brings about congestion and degradation in the central areas: the very urban functionality is thus prejudiced. This article gives a brief panorama of how the problem is faced in other countries, choosing some significant experiences, typified by the specific situation of the urban structure. From this there appears what was already to be expected on the theoretical level, and the is that only an integrated transport system is in a position to improve the functionality and quality of urban life.
