GEOTECHNICAL MAPPING SYMBOLS (GEMS): THE ENGINEERING GEOLOGISTS TOOL FOR COMMUNICATING WITH THE PLANNER, CIVIL ENGINEER AND DEVELOPMENT INTEREST

Geotechnical Mapping Symbols (GEMS) are simple graphics which depict geotechnical factors, hazards and constraints in map form. The goal of the GEMS system is to communicate effectively with non-geologists conceptual information required in early planning and project economic analyses. Traditional geologic map symbols clearly fail to achieve this goal; GEMS, however, provides a system of graphics effective and appropriate in communicating with planners, engineers and developers.
