NOISE REDUCTION OF DIESEL-ENGINED COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

The paper, presented at the 9th International Exhibition and Technical Conference for Environmental Protection in Basle 1983, reviews methods of reducing noise at Dereco by acoustically more acceptable designs without modifying the basic structure of the engine. Accurate analysis of the engine noise to determine the main sources of noise is essential. Acoustic improvements in the combustion process must be undertaken in the light of fuel consumption, toxic emission, performance and service life. Airborne noise, measured in the vicinity of each component showed that most noise was emitted through the sump, followed by the valve-gear cover, the crankcase and the cylinder head cover. Noise was also emitted by the intake manifold, the oil filter head and the injection pump. Noise reduction measures can be divided into three main groups: measures involving the inside of the engine; improvement of the engine compartment; additional measures directed at the engine area such as cladding and screening. Examples are given of measures that have been adopted including a twin-port sump for insulating the noise transmitted through the vehicle components, and the fitting of transverse stiffness on the sidewalls of the crankshaft, flywheel and clutch housings.
