EROSION IN ROAD SLOPES. STUDIES OF LITERATURE AND FIELD INVESTIGATION

EROSION I VAEGSLAENTER. LITTERATURSTUDIER OCH EN FAELTSTUDIE

Literature dealing with erosion of soils along slopes and road cuts has been studied. The agents of degradation of soil slopes are often described very briefly. On the other hand, the methods of stabilizing soils susceptible to erosion are carefully presented. Most of the methods used nowadays to assess the basic stability of any existing or proposed soil slope are known by Swedish road-builders, but sometimes it is difficult to propose the relevant method for any given situation. In a section of highway E6 northeast of Varberg on the Swedish west coast, an extensive investigation was carried out including geological and hydrogeological mapping, detailed surveying of sampling sites and road sections, sampling and testing of various soils, measuring of frost activity and groundwater, observation of field slope stability conditions. The purpose of the extensive investigation was to study the soil erosion and the proposed design and methods of prevention of the erosion along the road slopes. (Author/TRRL)
