This paper examines ways of reducing the weight of wheels without reducing their resistance to fatigue or other mechanical properties. The possibilities suggested are: better design, use of better quality steels, and generally choice of good quality materials, fibre reinforced plastic wheels and aluminium wheels (this option has been studied and the investigations are continuing), new concept of the wheel and the components round the wheel. The aim of the research is not only to decrease the weight but also to reduce prices and improve performance and quality. For the covering abstract of the conference see TRIS 392574. (TRRL)
