EXPERIENCES WITH POROUS ASPHALT; EXPERIMENTAL SECTIONS ON A12 NEAR DRIEBERGEN

ERVARINGEN MET ZEER OPEN ASFALTBETON; PROEFVAKKEN OP A12 BIJ DRIEBERGEN

In 1973 experimental sections of road of porous asphalt were constructed on state highway 12 in the Netherlands. The composition of the applied porous asphalt and the construction of the experimental sections of road are described. The Marshall properties as determined with different bitumen contents, the mean gradation, the percent air voids and the results of texture depth and skidding resistance measurements relating to the experimental sections are given. Resistance against permanent deformation, durability, structural strength, skidding resistance, winter performance, traffic noise aspects and carriageway marking of porous asphalt pavements are discussed. The necessity of research into service life on one hand and maintenance and winter maintenance on the other hand is outlined. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations are given. (TRRL)
