THE APPLICATION OF FLY ASH IN THE NETHERLANDS

VLIEGASTOEPASSING IN NEDERLAND

Coal-fired power stations in the Netherlands produced in 1983 450000 tons of fly ash and will produce in 2000 yearly between 1 and 2 mtons of fly ash. Fly ash consists of spherical glassy particles, is largely composed of compounds of sillica, alumins, iron and (earth) alkali metals and possesses so called pozzolanic characteristics. Because of these properties fly ash is very suitable for application in the building industry: in portland cement and portland fly ash cement production, in the concrete industry as filler material and as lightweight aggregate, in road construction as asphalt filler and as substitute for sand and cement and in the building brick industry. It is expected that the major part of the fly ash produced will be applied in the building industry. Problems research aspects, quality demands and quality control measurements are discussed. (TRRL)
