DETERMINATION OF THE DEFORMATION MODULUS OF ROCK FROM TUNNEL AND BOREHOLE LOADING TESTS

Exact solutions are presented for the radial displacement of plates and cylindrical membranes jacked or expanded against the walls of a circular tunnel or borehole. The plates have been assumed as either perfectly flexible or perfectly rigid and the surrounding rock mass has been assumed to behave as a homogeneous, isotropic, linear elastic continuum. The application of these solutions to the interpretation of plate jacking tests in tunnels, small jacking tests in boreholes and pressuremeter tests in boreholes has been discussed. (Author/TRRL)
