THE BUS SCENE IN SOUTH YORKSHIRE

The bus services of the Passenger Transport Executive (PTE) of Great Britain's South Yorkshire region are described. This PTE operates a thousand urban and interurban buses, as well as being responsible for subsidies for certain other transit operations. SY Transport has adopted a policy of life-equipped buses in special service for moving the handicapped, rather than encumbering regular buses with lifts, reducing their passenger capacity and increasing stop time when wheelchairs are accommodated. Like many other British operators, the SYT fleet has a high proportion of double-deck buses. Other mechanical details of the buses favored by SYT are also described.
