Cold planers are designed to correct a wide variety of pavement conditions - including corrugating, rutting, raveling, bleeding, aggregate polishing, as well as grade and slope restoration. Third World highways can especially benefit from cold planing for maintenance. Undulation due to hot sun and operational traffic are now simply planed off. Once this step is completed, the road may be left as it is or it may be resurfaced using the old material recycled in combination with new asphalt. In the developed nations, cold planing machines are used primarily for leveling. The skimming procedure leaves a flat surface that is textured and is particularly valuable when the road surface has been raised to high level. Less energy and manpower costs add to the method's attractions.
