RAIL POTENTIAL AND COUNTERMEASURE AGAINST POTENTIAL RISE

Electrified railways have electric current flowing through rails, which results in the rails having a potential to earth resulting from the rail impedance. This paper discusses the generation mechanism of rail potential, actual potential levels in Japan, and prevention methods. The study of rail potential has become necessary to ensure safe work conditions, for instance in maintenance or improvement of rail facilities. In planning electrification, the distance between substations of autotransformers should be determined to forecast rail potential values.
