Formation of CBTU, the government's urban railways administration, at the end of last year to monitor the construction and operation of regional metros in Brazil has given added impetus to the conversion of suburban railways into regional metros in Recife, Porto Alegre and Belo Horizonte. Although expansion of the suburban networks in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo continues, CBTU has an important role to play in the provincial cities. Recife's first 6.5 km section opens to traffic in January and Belo Horizonte's Eldorado line will be ready by mid-1985. The first of Porto Alegre's Japanese cars are being delivered at the moment ready for the start of operations next March.
