THE USE OF THE CLOTHOID CURVE IN THE GEOMETRY OF ROUNDABOUTS

IMPIEGO DELL'ARCO DI CLOTOIDE NELLA GEOMETRIA DELLE ROTARIE STRADALI

The use of the clothoid curve in the design of roundabouts is justified because of the well known advantages of the variable radius curve over one of constant radius, particularly with regard to the dynamics and stability of a moving vehicle. This article describes a computer program for the calculation of clothoid curves for roundabout design, and presents two charts (derived from the program) to facilitate the preselection of suitable curves on the basis of semidiameter length.
