TORSION IN PLAIN AND PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAMS CONTAINING POLYPROPYLENE FIBRES

Torsion tests on 23 plain and prestressed concrete beams containing polypropylene fibres are presented and discussed. The addition of these fibres to concrete is shown to improve the post-peak ductility, though there is no change in the ultimate torsional capacity of the beams tested. A simple method of predicting the ultimate torsional capacity of these beams from a knowledge of the cube strength and the applied prestress is proposed; by comparison with the experimentally observed strengths, the method is shown to yield satisfactory predictions.
