SULPHUR-ASPHALT - INVESTIGATION INTO THE APPLICABILITY IN THE NETHERLANDS

ZWAVELASFALT - NADER ONDERZOEK NAAR DE TOEPASBAARHEID IN NEDERLAND

In order to study the applicability of sulphur bituminous mixtures, experimental sections of road were constructed. A detailed description of the construction, during which nuclear density measurements and hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide emission measurements were carried out, is given. In the laboratory mix, composition, state of compaction, deformation behaviour, fatigue residual life and dynamic modulus of stiffness of sulphur bituminous pavement were determined. In situ, deflection and skidding resistance measurements were carried out. It is concluded that sulphur bituminous mixtures cause no health or environmental hazards, that the mixture requires no special construction or compaction methods and that it possesses a higher dynamic stiffness and a better resistance against rutting than ordinary bituminous mixtures.
