Keep It Moving! Maintaining the Global Vaccine Supply Chain
While the world is still struggling to manage the challenges in the global COVID-19 vaccine supply chain, global institutions and vaccine industries need to prepare for a more robust vaccine supply chain to deal with future disease events. This article presents highlights from a report emphasizing the critical role of transportation, delivery, and logistics in global health security. The report, Globally Resilient Supply Chains for Seasonal and Pandemic Influenza Vaccines, provides recommendations on how to enhance global vaccine development and manufacturing infrastructure and bolster vaccine distribution for pandemic and seasonal influenza events, using lessons learned from COVID-19 and other infectious disease outbreaks. The report was produced by the Advancing Pandemic and Seasonal Influenza Vaccine Preparedness and Response Initiative, launched by the National Academy of Medicine with support from the Office of Global Affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This article discusses critical components for vaccine manufacturing, distribution and delivery, transportation capacity and cold chain logistics, vaccine delivery and rollout, and vaccine design and distribution.
