TURBOCHARGER MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
This article provides information on turbocharger maintenance and repair. A few simple rules are given for increasing the service life of a turbocharger: (1) Keep the engine oil clean and change it often; (2) Install an oil temperature gauge and stay off the gas pedal until the engine's oil temperature is up to 85 deg C; (3) If the oil temperature approaches 125 deg C, install an oil cooler that is thermostatically controlled to keep the oil temperature near 110 deg C; and (4) Allow the engine to idle for a minute or so before shutting it down. Other information in this article relates to troubleshooting, excessive oil consumption, servicing the turbocharger, and waste gate service.
