The selection of the proper working fluid ( chiefly, mineral oil is of major importance to a reliable operation of the hydraulic drive of deck machinery. In this connection, the principal requirements that must be satisfied by these fluids are specified. The principal qualities that must be retained by the oils throughout the operation of the hydraulic system are: viscosity, pH value, and a specified limiting content of mechanical impurities and water. In each case quantitatively these qualities must be tailored to the design and type of the drive, its operating conditions, temperature regime, etc. Thus, e.g. when selecting a working fluid according to its viscosity it must be borne in mind that it varies with pressure: in systems with a pressure of 150-200 kg/ ( sq. cm ) the viscosity of oil is markedly higher and hence in such systems oils with a lower ( by 30-35 percent ) original viscosity should be used. Conversely, in systems with high operating temperatures viscosity sharply decreases and the lubricant properties of the fluid become adversely affected. Hence the selected oil must be characterized by a gently sloping viscosity-temperature curve, which is determined by the viscosity index.
