A novel design for small and medium span bridges is presented which makes use of passive earth force behind the loads from the superstructure. Preliminary steps for design and the method of construction are outlined. An example of a 30 M bridge of the new design is compared with a conventional simply supported span. It is intended that the design when fully developed will enable proportioning the structure for more efficient utilization of material and lead to an aesthetically satisfying solution. (TRRL)
