COULOMB'S THEORY OF EARTH PRESSURE FOR COHESIVE SOILS

Most of the text books on soil mechanics give the expressions for the magnitudes of active and passive earth pressures based on Coulomb's theory for backfills of cohesionless soils. Similar expressions are not available for backfills of cohesive soils. A general expression is derived in this paper for the magnitude of active earth pressure for an inclined backfill of cohesive soil with a uniform surcharge connecting possible tension cracks. A numerical example is included for illustration. (Author/TRRL)
