HISTORICAL OVERVIEW: NATIONAL DEFENSE AND THE NATIONAL SYSTEM OF INTERSTATE AND DEFENSE HIGHWAYS

The National System of Interstate and Defense Highways has eveloved over the long history of our nation with a twofold purpose: to serve the strictly civilian needs for long distance social and industrial transportation, and the needs of national defense. In fulfilling the needs of defense, the Interstate will not only be used to expedite the nationwide movement of military forces and equipment, but is expected to prove vital in defense-oriented industry as well. Not ignored is the essential role the Interstate system would play in civil defense evacuation as a result of nuclear strikes on the United States' rail centers, airfields, and other major transportation facilities.
