NEW BARRIER OFFERS ATTRACTIVE NOISE CONTROL

The article discusses the Swiss-developed "Evergreen" system, in which layers of open concrete troughs form a freestanding wall covered with vegetation growing out of earth-filled pockets. When properly installed and planted, almost no bare concrete is exposed. The noise abatement properties of the wall tend to increase as plants proliferate. The walls are assembled on site by stacking prefabricated concrete modules that are 2 feet high and from 12 to 18 feet long. Each module is back-filled with soil after placement.
