COUPLED THREE- DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION THEORY OF UNSATURATED POROUS MEDIA

A coupled, two-phase flow, three-dimensional consolidation theory is presented for unsaturated porous media. Stress state variables and basic physical relations required for unsaturated soils are outlined. The constitutive relations, which link the stress and deformation state variables, are summarized for the soil structure, the water and air phases. The consoldiation theory is formulated by coupling the elastic equilibrium and continuity equations. Application to a one-dimensional case is presented. Two partial differential equations for the water and air phases are derived. Both equations are solved simultaneously. (Author/TRRL)
