FATIGUE LIFE OF PARTIALLY PRESTRESSED CONCRETE GIRDERS

Results of fatigue tests on two kinds of Australian prestressing steels are summarised. The information presented can be used to predict the mean fatigue life of prestressing wires and strands for conditions of both constant cycle and cumulative damage loading. The test data correlate well with the results of strand fatigue tests carried out in the United States. Attention is drawn to progressive changes which occur in the response of partially prestressed concrete beams when subjected to repeated loads. These need to be considered and allowed for when the fatigue resistance of a member is evaluated from the fatigue properties of the component materials. (Author/TRRL)
