RECENT ADVANCES IN THE STUDY OF LAMELLAR TEARING

An up-to-date review of research conducted into causes and prevention of lamellar tearing is given, referring to the initiation and propagation mechanisms involved and crack detection methods used. The development of a theoretical analysis, based on three dimensional numerical methods, is described which tackles the unsolved problems of susceptibility of materials to lamellar tearing during the transient welding processes and afterwards, welded joints. The final section suggests future methods to study the crack initiation and propagation problems in a welded joint, and refers to the fracture mechanics approach as a research technique of considerable promise.
