Optimal designs of elastic beam-columns subjected to the simultaneous action of axial and transverse forces are presented. The total volume of material that the beam- column can use is prescribed, and the design that minimizes the maximum transverse deflection is sought. The optimization problem is a strict minimax problem in that the maximum transverse deflection is minimized. Allowance is made for the initial curvature of the member axis. Several numerical examples are presented and compared with prismatic beam-columns. (TRRL)
