CONTINUOUS VELOCITY FIELDS IN YIELD LINE THEORY - A COMPLEX VARIABLE APPROACH

The relationship between the classical theory of plasticity and yield-line theory for reinforced concrete slabs is briefly described. The validity of the complex variable approach is justified on the yield locus which RH Wood calls the "normal moment criterion" and applications to continuous velocity fields (fans) are developed. In particular, Cauchy's theorem and Cauchy's integral formula are applied in the context of yield-line theory. The latter formula asserts that a collapse mechanism in a continuous velocity field can only occur if an isolated singularity occurs within the boundary yield-line contour. (TRRL)
