The Netherlands were the first country where automatic traffic counts were introduced. In 1969 the Rijkswaterstaat started automatic data collection. The article describes the most modern counting equipment ES-06 consisting of detection unit, processor and automatic read-out units using public telephone facilities. (Author/TRRL)
