National studies of truck mass, dimensions and mechanical requiements (the NAASRA ERVL and road train studies) have led to considerable research effort into heavy vehicles at ARRB. This research has led to (I) new strength rating formulae for pin-couplings in road trains, (II) a user's guide to suspension selection on vehicles with high centre- of-gravity positions, and (III) a recommended design rule test for suspensions to protect roads. These developments are described, as are current efforts to produce strength ratings for fifth wheel couplings. Areas for future research into heavy vehicles at ARRB are briefly discussed.
