USE OF NATURAL MATERIALS IN PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION IN NORTH QUEENSLAND

This paper concentrates on the use of natural materials in pavements in the remote areas of North Queensland. It shows that most naturally occurring materials are non-standard when compared with standard departmental specifications and that while some can be made to conform by processing, others must be used in a non-standard condition. Given that non-standard material must be used in some remote areas because of availability and for economic reasons, a rational approach to pavement design with these materials is presented. Optimum use of these materials is dependent on a fair measure of uniformity and ways of achieving this along with quality and dimensional controls are discussed. Construction methods are outlined briefly. (Author/TRRL)
