POSSIBILITIES FOR ENERGY SAVING BY ROAD TRAFFIC

MOGELIJKHEDEN VOOR ENERGIEBESPARING IN HET WEGVERKEER

Ten percent of the energy needs of the road transport system are for road construction and maintenance. The rest is spent on keeping vehicles moving. It is apparent that much attention should be given to energy savings in traffic operation. Short term measures could be: better maintenance, improved driving behaviour through electronic aids and better tuition, and effective information on optimal use of the car. For the middle and long term some possibilities are: standards for fuel consumption, subsidies for vehicle improvements, taxes on thirsty vehicles and information influencing car choice. Use of diesel and LPG should also be encouraged by abandoning the extra road tax. (TRRL)
