QUANTITATIVE ESTIMATION OF TRINIDAD LAKE ASPHALT IN HOT ROLLED AND MASTIC ASPHALTS

The paper describes a method whereby a quantitative estimate of the lake asphalt content of a bituminous mix may be obtained. The soluble component of this material exhibits an absorption in the infrared region of the spectrum at a wavenumber of 1708 per cm. A study has been made of the change in this absorption as the concentration of lake asphalt bitumen is varied by the addition of a petroleum bitumen. A calibration curve has been constructed on the basis of this study from which the proportion of lake asphalt can be ascertained from a measured absorbance and tested by analysing mixes of known composition.
