The stress-strain relationship of concrete is influenced by confinement provided by transverse reinforcement. The paper establishes such a relationship for a concrete section confined by rectangular binders on the basis of test results. A new parameter "confinement index" which incorporates the spacing of binders, the ratio of the volume of binders to volume of concrete under compression, the yield strength of transverse binders and the compressive strength of concrete is also introduced. An inelastic stress distribution has been developed and stress block parameters are evaluated in terms of confinement index which are adopted to estimate the inelastic strength of confined elements and can further be utilized to analyse the deformation response of confined elements at critical regions.
