High strength concrete (9000 psi (62.1 MPa)) provided structural advantages, long-term durability, and economy for this 283-ft (86.3 m) long, precast prestressed concrete highway bridge which crosses the Toutle River in the State of Washington. The structure is a post-tensioned three-span continuous girder bridge (see plan view and cross-sectional details). The individual girder sections were cast in lengths of 89 ft 6 in. and 95 ft (27.3 and 29.0 m). The girder sections were spliced in the field, resulting in finished girder lengths of 277 ft (84.45 m).
