Spatial distribution modelling approaches are classified into six classes: the most probable state, entropy maximizing, minimum information principle, maximum utility, optimizing, and cost efficiency principle approaches. The entropy maximizing and the minimum information principle approaches are not recommended as descriptive tools for trip distribution behaviour, since they model the information available about the physical world rather than the physical world itself. The most probable state and the cost efficiency principle approaches are reviewed in some detail, and it is concluded that the latter is the most satisfying approach. (Author/TRRL)
