Some causes and consequences of automobile accidents were studied in a one year consecutive series of all automobile accidents in Sweden (1975) where an automobile occupant was killed. In 97% of the cases, autopsies were performed. The injuries, the preventive effect of seat belts, and the influence of unrestrained back seat occupants upon the injuries to the front seat occupants in head-on collisions were studied. The importance of psychoactive drugs as a cause of automobile accidents as well as the head and neck injuries sustained by riders of motorized two-wheel vehicles and the influence of protective helmets were studied in consecutive series where all the victims killed were examined post mortem. Drunk driving is an important cause of automobile accidents especially in single vehicle accidents. Driving under the influence of psychoactive drugs seemed to be a minor problem. More than 50% of the drivers involved in single vehicle accidents were socially deviant as defined by registration in the social and criminal record and driving inebriated in the accident. Prevention from ejection is the most beneficial effect of lap-shoulder seat belts. Considering the impact energy, the belts give protection in accidents of low and moderate impact speed. The steering assembly represents an increased risk for the driver. Unrestrained back seat occupants increase the risk for injury to the restrained occupant sitting in the front seat. Injuries to the head and neck are the most common cause of death among riders of motorized two-wheel vehicles. Nearly half of these injuries are located remote from the point of impact. Those injuries were most often caused by impacts against the frontal part of the head. Fatal head injuries at the point of impact were also seen among helmet wearers. (Author/TRRL)
