FOOTWAYS CONVERTED TO JOINT USE BY CYCLISTS AND PEDESTRIANS

This study consists of: a collection of information from local authorities, counts of cyclists, pedestrians and traffic, observations of behaviour with the use of time lapse photography, surveys of attitudes of cyclists, pedestrians and residents , and analysis of the data and preparation of the report. Details are given of the implemented schemes and those selected for the survey: Berkshire, Cambridge, Newcastle upon Tyne and Grimsby. Those sites represented a range of different cases and carried the higher levels of flow. Conclusions are presented concerning the legislative procedure for conversion, staff resources and time scale, public consultation, use of facilities by the blind and disabled, usage of footways, and cyclist and pedestrian behaviour attitudes.
