AUTOMATION IN ROAD SURVEY AND MAPPING WORK

The purpose of this report is to give information about the present status of automation in road survey and mapping work, and if possible, to give some ideas of further progress. Initially, the report gives a description of modern survey equipment, in general as well as in particular for some instruments of current interest. As regards modern equipment, an outline of data acquisition and data processing is given, in which problems of error sources, error correction and coding of measured data are treated. This report also discusses changes in survey procedures and methods, caused by the application of automated survey equipment. Finally, some examples of current application are given, relating to the public roads administration in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. This report is mainly addressed to personnel dealing with survey work, or who have a basic knowledge of the subject. (Author/TRRL)
