YOUNG DRIVERS. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SUBJECTIVE AND ACTUAL DRIVING ABILITY. THE CONCEPT DRIVING ABILITY

UNGA FOERARE. FOERHAALLANDE MELLAN UPPLEVD OCH FAKTISK KOERFOERMAAGA. BEGREPPET KOERFOERMAAGA

Young drivers are at considerably greater risk than older drivers. Even when allowance is made for lack of driving experience, young drivers are still at greater risk, and this must be assumed to be due to age-related factors. The attitude of young drivers to traffic and traffic behaviour is a possible explanation. A study was started in 1982 of the actual and subjective driving ability of young drivers. In order to define the concept driving ability, a workshop was arranged in 1983. There is a relationship between subjective driving ability and reported driving style; the higher a driver judges his driving ability to be, the more aggressively he drives (speed, overtaking frequency). Assessment of risks does not appear to depend on driving experience. The defect seems to be found in the cognitive-perceptual part of the driving process rather than in the cognitive-motor part, i.e. It is more difficult for a driver to learn at what and in what way to look in order to avoid an accident than to learn what to do when a hazard has been recognised. It seems that, generally, men have better driving ability than women, but women are more realistic in assessing their ability. (TRRL)
