VISION REQUIREMENTS FOR MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATORS

SEHVERMOEGEN UND KRAFTVERKEHR

This report is an analysis of the minimal visual requirements for motor vehicle operators. The commission was composed of opthamologists, psychologists, engineers, and lawyers. For the most part the commission used scientific publications as the basis of its investigations, but it did conduct large scale original research to determine whether the examination in the doctor's office is an adequate test of the patient's reactions in traffic. The report concluded that (1) the entire motor vehicle traffic system, e.g., traffic signals, lanes, pedestrian regulations, etc., must be based on the minimal visual requirements for restricted licenses and that (2) particularly rigorous eye examinations should be given to driver's license applicants who are 60 years old or over.
